Speaker: Dr Laith Al-Jobouri, Abertay University Dundee, Scotland, UK
Title: From 1G to beyond 5G: Four decades of mobile evolution and the research shaping what’s next
Abstract: The first part of this talk will explore the evolution of mobile technology over the past four decades, from early analogue systems to today’s data-driven mobile ecosystems. It will highlight major technological milestones and examine how economic factors, data growth, and market forces have shaped successive generations of mobile networks, turning mobile connectivity into a foundation of the digital economy.
The second part will focus on high-impact 5G research projects and real-world use cases developed at Abertay University and led by Dr Laith Al-Jobouri. These projects demonstrate how advanced 5G capabilities—including ultra-low latency, high reliability, and massive device connectivity—are unlocking transformative applications across smart cities, immersive media, cybersecurity, and the creative industries. Collectively, the work highlights both immediate societal and economic benefits and longer-term implications for innovation, skills development, and the evolution toward next-generation networks beyond 5G.
