Title: Embedded intermittent systems for the Internet of Things
Abstract: Energy-harvesting Internet of Things (IoT) systems offer a sustainable alternative to battery-powered devices but face challenges arising from unpredictable energy availability and frequent power interruptions. This talk explores intermittent computing techniques to improve the energy efficiency and reliability of autonomous sensing systems. It presents approaches for recovering system state following power failures and reducing state-retention overhead by saving only modified memory locations. Building on these techniques, energy management strategies are also introduced to dynamically adapt energy storage and operating voltage to task requirements while maintaining timekeeping during power outages. Finally, energy-aware communication scheduling for intermittent computing is presented to minimise destructive collisions and packet losses in energy-constrained sensor networks.
Bio: Dr Domenico Balsamo is a Senior Lecturer in Microelectronic Systems with a research focus on embedded systems hardware and software co-design. He is within the School of Engineering at Newcastle University, UK. He has multidisciplinary skills, from designing computer architectures and embedded systems to constructing communication and mixed-signal integrated circuits. These skills have led him to conduct internationally recognised research on creating and validating new design strategies for a class of energy-constrained embedded and distributed systems. He co-leads the Microsystems Research Group and the AI and Pervasive Systems (AIPS) Research Lab. He received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2015. He has more than fifteen years of experience designing energy-efficient embedded systems. He has an active role in different EPSRC, EU FP7 and EU HORIZON 2020 projects, leading to 50+ publications in top journals and conference proceedings.
